How To Become A Leader
Do you struggle to get your message across to people?
Do you have trouble giving directions?
Does public speaking make you nervous?
If that sounds like you, don’t worry, you are not alone! Even the world’s greatest leaders had to learn how to overcome those feelings.
When I was offered my first managerial position at a hotel, I almost didn’t accept the promotion. The thought of being in charge and telling people what to do made me nervous — I didn’t think I was capable. Later in my career I learned my fear of public speaking was the real problem holding me back. You see, the main function of leadership is communication, so first you have to master how to get your message across.
On my journey to mastering public speakers, I joined my local toastmaster chapter. I observed my fellow toastmasters over time and noticed some people are natural leaders, but anyone can learn. When I got up to give my first speech, I learned what my manager saw in me that I didn’t realize — I naturally connect with people, and it felt great! I studied up on the world’s greatest leaders and learned if you can grab people’s attention and maintain a connection, they will listen, and do whatever you want.
Public Speaking Tips:
- Body Language is everything. Focus on your posture, how you gesture with your hands and eyes. Check your tonality and demeanour. Ask yourself: Would I trust me?
- Audiences connect and listen to speakers they like, people who are like them or how they want to be. Build rapport with your audience and be someone they admire so they’ll listen.
- Train your body and voice to reflect your best self. Pretend you are constantly on the TV and the whole world is watching you all the time.
