Do you have problems setting constructive and successful goals?
Does it feel like every time you are close to achieving your goals, something happens and you go back to square one?
Are you close to your desired goals, yet they are still out of reach?
Dont feel bad, you are definitely not alone. Most people dont know how to set reasonable goals. They know exactly what they want in the end, but they dont know how to get there. As a life coach and financial expert, Ive worked with hundreds of people on goal setting. In my experience, most people run into the same problem: they focus all of their energy on what they want as the peak of their success, but they dont create the necessary steps to get there. Their goals are like flying birds. What do I mean by that? We all have the tendency to dream big, in fact, its human instinct to want more, do more, and be more. Like how the grass grows, the trees get taller, mountains get larger, people, too, want to reach the top.
The problem lies in your attitude. Thats not to say you have a bad attitude, but you cant let your past failed attempts hold you back. If you let them fester they will increase your fear and doubt, which will grow into a feeling of worthlessness and eventually, you may give up. Dont fall into this cycle, its toxic and destroys so many peoples dreams. Instead, get into the rhythm of success.
How do you get in the rhythm of success? My method is easy, and it always works with my clients. You must start by setting small, actionable goals that you can accomplish easily and immediately. When you check these little things off your to-do list, it will give you a postive, accomplished feeling. When you set large, seemingly impossible goals that can take years, youll start to feel overwhelmed and failure will consume you. But, if instead, you set small goals and achieve them, youll get used to the feeling of success. If you continue to build on that positive emotion, soon you will have enough power to make your big dreams come true.
Let me tell you the story of how this worked for one of my clients that was in huge credit card debt. Her debt was causing her so much stress and anxiety, she couldnt sleep at night. Her solution, which was admirable, was to work four jobs until her debt was paid. But it still wasnt enough. When I came to help her and look at her finances, I saw that she had a few small debts she was ignoring, focusing on the main credit card instead. So I said to her, wait, you can afford to pay off some of these small debts right away. Lets try these first and see how you feel. And you know what? She was able to pay off all of her small debts in less than six months. She accomplished this using a payment plan I helped her create and by getting into the rhythm of success. She started sleeping through the night again too.
In the end, we were able to get her a debt consolidation loan that paid off her main credit card debt and offered a better interest rate and payment plan terms. She paid off her total debt, was able to secure a new credit card and a mortgage, with a credit score of almost 800. The moral of the story is that she was able to do all of this because she developed a feeling of accomplishment by setting small attainable goals and accomplishing them one by one. Like a great King once said, Accept the things in life you cannot change, have the strength and courage to change the things you can, and develop the wisdom and understanding to know the difference.
