Is Money The Root of All Evil - The Misconception and Truth

In one of my earlier Youtube videos, I’ve discussed if money is the root of all evil. Human desires can be the root of all evil, not money itself. Watch the video below and read on as I discuss why money is not the root of all evil in more detail.

The Misconception – 1 Timothy 6:10

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Probably one of the most misinterpreted bible verse, many wrongly come to a conclusion that money is the root of all evil through this verse.

Many misquoted this verse as, “Money is the root of all evil.” Notice how instead of love of money, people went for money alone. Instead of a root of all kinds of evil, it turned to the root of all evil. Though they may seem like just small subtle changes, they greatly alter the context of the verse.

This misinterpreted verse leads many to believe that money is the root of all evil, which is false. There is nothing wrong with money. It is too much love for money that leads them astray.

The Truth – Human Desires

When you think about it, evil people (serial killers, sexual harassers, bullies and such) are not driven by money. So money is not what drives people to commit sins, it’s their wicked human desires.

As stated in the Bible (Matthew 15:19; Romans 5:12; James 1:15), sin sparked by dark desires and ill thoughts is the root of all evil in the world. Human desires dictate how we put value on things, including money. How you value money is what makes it good or evil.

If your desires are on the darker side, then it is only to be expected that you see money in a dark light as well. If you have good and righteous desires, you’ll end up using your money on equally good and righteous things.

Money is Not Evil But Can Be Used for Evil

“Good people use money to do good things. Bad people use money to do bad things. Happy people use money to make others happy. Likewise, sad people use money to make others sad.” - Garth Vickers

This is the reason why there are people who build hospitals and schools, feed the poor and build businesses to provide employment to others with their money. There are also those people who destroy mountains and forests, manufacture illegal drugs and build dangerous chemicals and weapons with their money.

Money is simply a tool people use to fulfill their desires. Just like how a knife is a tool people use to cut an onion for a warm breakfast recipe or wound another person to harm them. Evil lies not in a thing but in the person using it – the motive, the manner they use it and their desired end result.

Money is not the root of all evil. For something as old as the oldest form of civilization, money cannot be evil. The root of all evil lies within us. Good or evil blooms from our desires. Money is an instrument we use to fulfill those desires.

“We can't teach all the rich people in this world to be good enough but we can teach all the good people to be wealthy. And when this mission is accomplished, this world will always be a better place.”
